Eye Exams for Children

Eye exams for children are extremely important. Experts say 5 percent-10 percent of pre-schoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child's vision problem is crucial because, if left untreated, some childhood vision problems can cause permanent vision loss.

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age.

Children then should receive additional eye exams at 3 years of age, and just before they enter kindergarten or the first grade at about age 5 or 6.

For school-aged children, the AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or according to their eye doctor’s recommendations.

Eye Exams for Adults

Regardless of your age or physical health, it’s important to have regular eye exams.

During a complete eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

In order to perform the most comprehensive exam, your eye doctor will likely perform a dilated exam.  You can expect your exam to take approximately one hour, however the time it takes for your eyes to return to their natural state may be 2-3 hours, following the completion of your eye exam.

To maintain a lifetime of healthy vision, the AOA recommends a comprehensive eye exam every two years for adults ages 18 to 60, and annual exams for seniors age 61 and older.

Optical Services

When buying eyeglasses, the frame you choose is important to both your appearance and your comfort when wearing glasses. But the eyeglass lenses you choose influence four factors: appearance, comfort, vision and safety. We have frame options from independent boutiques to mainstream brands.

With so many different options in lens material, coatings and lens design, we rely heavily upon the knowlege of our doctors and staff to make recommendtions that will provide the most personalized outcome specific to your needs.

Contact Lens Services

Our clinic is proficient in fitting soft lenses (daily, weekly, and monthly replacement options), rigid lenses and scleral lenses.  We use contact lenses in the treatment of disease and in the correction of refractive error.

It's important to understand that a comprehensive eye exam does not include a contact lens fitting. Contact lens fittings are required of current, previous and new wearers.  It is important to inform the receptionist when scheduling your appointment if you are interested in contact lenses.

LASIK/Refractive Surgery

LASIK (short for laser in situ keratomileusis) is the most popular type of laser vision correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Extensive studies show 95% satisfaction among patients worldwide and LASIK is now one of the most performed surgical procedures. However, successful outcomes are highly dependent on surgeon skill and experience.  Indian Creek Family Eye Care works closely with a referral co-management center to make sure our patients are well cared for before, during and after refractive surgery.

Cataract Services

Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process and most of us develop them by 70 years of age. Cataracts are a cloudiness that develops in the normally clear lens of the eye. This cloudiness usually worsens until it scatters or blocks light entering the eye. A person with cataracts cannot see clearly and colors may appear dim and faded.

The doctors at Indian Creek Family Eye Care work closely with multiple surgeons to get you the personal cataract surgery you need.  We often coordinate care directly with the cataract surgeron and provide all post-op care at our clinic in Hood River.

Referral Services

There are times when a surgical consult or secondary evaluation is required. Our doctors have established relationships with specialized physicians in retina, pediatrics, oculoplastics, cornea, glaucoma, neurophthalmology and general ophthalmology.  We commonly refer to OHSU's Casey Eye Institute and Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute.
